High School Art Courses

Art Foundations (Grades 9-12)

Course Credit: 1/2-1

Duration: Half/Full Year

This course introduces students to a broad range of media, including acrylic paint, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, linoleum block prints, and more. Through exploring these media, students will establish a foundation in a variety of techniques while developing a personal artistic style. Investigations of art history and visual culture, combined with analysis of the elements and principles of design, will contribute to an understanding of diverse perspectives and styles that will inform students’ creative growth.

Studio I (Grades 9-12)

Course Credit: 1

Duration: Full Year

This course is designed for students who have had some experience with a variety of media and techniques, or who have a strong interest in developing their artistic skills. Projects will incorporate the study of art history, visual culture, and compositional techniques, and will include both 2-D and 3-D design. Students interested in pursuing art in higher education or as a career will work on portfolio development, and all students will have the opportunity to advance their technical skills and personal artistic vision.

Advanced Art (Grades 10-12)

Course Credit: 1

Duration: Full Year

Prerequisite: Studio I or permission of the instructor

This course builds upon and refines the drawing, painting, printmaking, and 3-D design techniques practiced in Intermediate Art. Students will work on a combination of assigned and independently designed projects in order to advance their technical skills and creativity with a broad range of media. Investigations of art history and visual culture will serve as inspiration for original ideas and an evolving artistic vision. Students interested in pursuing art in higher education or as a career will work on portfolio development, and all students will have the opportunity to explore their unique style and creativity with a variety of media.

Clay (Grades 9-12)

Course Credit: 1 or 1/2

Duration: Full Year or Half Year

 This course introduces students to the fundamental methods of working with clay, both on the wheel and by hand. Students will develop hand-building techniques (slab, coil, and pinch) through forms such as bowls, vases, plates, and figurative sculpture, and they will also explore surface design, such as glazing and carving. Studying art history and the ceramic designs of diverse cultures will contribute to students’ understanding of these techniques while informing their artistic growth and creativity with clay.

Art Concentration/Independent Study (Grades 11-12)

Course Credit: 1

Duration: Full Year

 An independent study in art is ideal for students who are interested in pursuing art in higher education or as a career. The primary focus will be on portfolio development, which includes designing projects that require students to think creatively, exercise technical excellence, sharpen observational skills, and critically reflect on their work. Students must be self-directed, motivated, responsible, and diligent about completing their work, which they will discuss in writing and with the instructor.
